Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season were no match even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
