Similar to the recent storm hit the north-west the prior day, Manchester City swept the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled consecutive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, placing them a significant margin off the league leaders with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capability to manage domestic and European football with a thin roster has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Regrettably for the visitors, they seemed weary throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had attempted to make changes with a a few adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar loading concerns. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since healing from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period
